2021 Healthiest Employers of New York City

2021 Finalists

September 1, 2021

Each year, the Healthiest Employers® awards program honors the best and brightest in workplace wellness. Over the past year and a half, it has become apparent that when it comes to employees’ overall wellbeing, employers have an incredible opportunity to offer benefits that fit an employee’s unique needs – regardless of where they are in their health journey. This year, our New York City honorees faced a challenging world as they learned how to operate efficiently during a global pandemic, while still focusing on the needs of their population.

We have seen the highest increase in scoring on components that relate to employees’ work-life balance. 88.2% of New York City applicants offer paid maternity leave and 80% offer career development training and opportunities. 100% of this year’s applicants provided funding for their wellness programming to address the growing needs of employees. In addition, 100% of applicants allowed flexible work schedules and 80% provided additional PTO hours.

The Healthiest Employers® survey is scored and powered by Springbuk, a health intelligence platform that simplifies data-driven decision-making with an intuitive user experience, predictive modeling, and curated action steps. The assessment is scored on a 1-100 scale. Since 2009, Healthiest Employers has been the leading recognition program for employee wellness. Today, we currently host award ceremonies in over 45 regions across the country and applicants are not only eligible for local recognition, but also have the chance to earn a spot on the Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America. This national award takes the highest scoring applicants from all locations, company sizes, and industries. RPT Realty is a national owner and operator of modern and engaging open-air shopping destinations primarily located in top U.S. markets. They emphasize the importance of data in chronic condition management and carefully tracking improvements within their population. Since the onset of COVID-19, they have incorporated several different online platforms surrounding health and wellness. Their technological investments have made the difference in programming, as employees are engaging in virtual meditation, cooking classes, health coaching, and targeted chronic condition management and coaching resources.

1st AAA Northeast – Providence, Rhode Island (Local Office: New York City)

AAA provides products and services to deliver safety, security, and peace of mind to members. In a time of cutting costs and reducing programs, AAA Northeast is working to do the opposite by adding resources. Their wellness program considers the “full well-being” of the employee, which focuses on not just physical, but mental, emotional, and financial wellness, as well. For employees, they implemented $15 per hour minimum, a new 401(k) vendor with 6% matching, and enhanced bonus programs. Additionally, they offer a 100% paid subscription to mental health resources in an effort to remove the stigma around mental health programming. Some portals are even applicable to spouses on the health plan, as AAA works to also incorporate health into employees' lives at home.

“In every decision we make, we are always putting the best interest of the employee and their families first. Many companies can say this, but we live it. We strive to ensure our benefit program is comprehensive, affordable, sustainable, and most importantly, provides what employees need. No matter what stage of life they are in, we want them to feel safe, secure, and encourage their wellness journeys.” – Kristen Botelho, Managing Director Total Rewards and Systems

Even with so many employees at Northwell, it is important for them to create a community to support and recognize each other. Many employees experienced trauma and loss over the past year and a half, leading to an enhanced emotional well-being support network. They added emotional support call centers equipped with licensed healthcare professionals, created The Center for Traumatic Stress Resilience and Recovery for in-person therapy, and held services for members of the team and their families who were affected by COVID-19. When surveyed anonymously, 90% of the employee population at Northwell said that they were “proud to work here,” a testimony to the positive environment that upper leadership has maintained during this difficult time.
