2021 Finalists
September 27, 2021
Each year, the Healthiest Employers® awards program honors the best and brightest in workplace wellness. Over the past year and a half, it has become apparent that when it comes to employees’ overall well-being, employers have an incredible opportunity to offer benefits that fit an employee’s unique needs – regardless of where they are in their health journey.
The Southern California region expands from Los Angeles all the way to San Diego. The Healthiest Employers assessment is scored Rubric style on a 1-100 scale. The assessment is made up of six categories with yes/no, multiple choice, and short answer questions, with each question totaling .25-3 points. A Healthiest Employers Index (HEI) is assigned to each applicant to help rank among companies of similar size.
The 6 categories evaluated:
- Culture and Leadership Commitment
- Foundational Components
- Strategic Planning
- Communications and Marketing
- Programming and Interventions
- Reporting and Analytics
The following organizations were named to the Healthiest Employers of Southern California for the 2021 nomination period. Congratulations to our finalists!
Small
1st David Evans and Associates – Portland, Oregon (Local Office: Ontario)
David Evans Associates is a civil engineering company that provides design and management complex transportation, land development, water resources, and energy projects nationwide. Their leadership team recognized a need to switch their wellness program from being primarily physical health focused to encompassing all pillars of wellbeing. By increasing mental health resources and focusing on work-life balance, they have noticed significant decreases in claims spend and a happier workforce.
“We recognized that our older wellness program wasn’t meeting employees’ needs and interests, so we used a consultant and employee focus groups to build our own program with a more holistic approach. We’ve built the program in recognition of each person’s unique path on their own wellbeing journey, and we also provide collective experiences, fostering community within our organization and with connections to the communities where we live.” – Al Barkouli, Chairman and CEO
2nd Walker & Dunlop – Bethesda, Maryland (Local Office: Irvine)
Midsize
1st OneAmerica – Indianapolis, Indiana (Local Office: San Diego)
OneAmerica is a financial services company that aims to provide customers with retirement services, life insurance policies, asset-based care, and employee benefits. Their program’s success is credited to the high levels of engagement with their onsite clinic. Of the employees with moderate risk, 90% improved their risk levels in the last 12 months through the clinic’s coaching and resources. The clinic also provides more cost savings options when compared to external care providers.
“80% of our associate population agreed that they felt good about both their mental and physical health when surveyed in the middle of the pandemic. We continue to experience improvements across population health metrics and reduction in claims expenses over the last three years as a result of our health and well-being strategy. In a time when some companies are reducing benefits, it is exciting to have the ability to continue to invest in our people leading to meaningful health and wellbeing outcomes.” – Chris Pohl, Vice President of Total Rewards

3rd AmTrust Financial – New York, New York (Local Office: Irvine)
4th Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. – Santa Clara

In response to COVID-19, they created an online resource portal in order to provide education on mental health, childcare, and community support across their multiple job sites. They also expanded their benefits to provide more support to dependents and spouses during the pandemic and provided flexible working opportunities.
“The McCarthy Build for Life wellness program has proven to benefit McCarthy employee shareholders in two very meaningful ways. First and foremost, our program serves as an effective resource to improve the physical, emotional and financial health of our employees. Second, as our employees work on improving their health and take an active role in their healthcare, the company’s medical claim costs decline, which improves the value of our company and in turn the net worth of our employee shareholders.” – Doug Audiffred, Chief Financial Officer
