1st The Starr Group– 26 Employees
The Starr Group is an insurance and risk-management agency that has been in business since 1956. They specialize in balancing insurance with alternative risk financing strategies while improving their customer's total risk wellness. The Starr Group has been a role model for building a "culture by design" and assists other business leaders with this process.
“The wellness program at The Starr Group has helped me make lifestyle changes that have helped me to live a healthier and happier life. With the education, challenges, and programs offered, I have reduced my cholesterol by 60 points within a three-year period and ran two marathons along with many half marathons. It started with results from biometrics when the doctor wanted me to go on meds. I refused, using the education on nutrition and exercise from the wellness program, then added exercise and started off with running 5ks. I was challenged by my mentor and leader to join her in a triathlon. I decided to reach for something bigger that I enjoyed, which was running. I then pushed myself to run a half marathon. I was overwhelmed with joy after completing such a distance. I was challenged again by our leader to go for a marathon, I took the challenge, and ran two marathons in two years. I’m grateful for our well-being program! All of this has allowed me to fully live my life and perform at my best!” -Maureen Brennan, VP of Operations

“Getting involved in our wellness program really helped me stay connected during the pandemic. I didn't realize all the options that were in the portal until I looked into it more after being stuck at home for weeks. Although I wasn't able to complete all my annual health assessments because of the difficulty getting into doctors' offices, I was able to get a lot of coaching and support. The OneAmerica program is well-rounded in looking at the entire associate and being healthy in all areas. I am one of the wellness champions for OneAmerica, and this is an important role to be lucky enough to be in. People are so busy with their job responsibilities, but others taking time to point out the programs, benefits, how to participate, and just help them find things on OA Connect, our associate portal, makes a big difference with participation. “In early 2020, the world was beginning to come to grips that we were at the start of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, and with the realization came the acknowledgment of how people with underlying health conditions could be impacted more so than the average person. It was with this knowledge that I began to realize that I was substantially overweight, had allergy-induced asthma, and was diagnosed with prehypertension and high blood pressure. All of these situations had the potential to make it harder for my body to recover if I was infected with the virus. In an effort to make a change, I began tracking my habits and steps in the Virgin Pulse wellness program. As I got more into the app and tracking, I began pushing myself a little more every day. By April 2021, I had lost 71 pounds in 14 months, and I can proudly say I am also no longer considered prehypertensive!” - James Ramsey, National Safety Director

In addition, I regularly met with the Healthy & Well-Being dietitian and began participating in all the incentive programs.
