In partnership with Springbuk, we are excited to announce our honorees for the 2023 Healthiest Employers of Indiana. All applicants were considered for our Healthiest 100 Workplaces America award which was announced on October 4

75.0% of these companies surveyed are on a hybrid schedule where employees are in the office on specific days. 20% work onsite or in-person and 5% of companies are considered fully remote. 

Additionally, some notable statistics from this year’s groups include:

  • 100% report offering free parking or transportation reimbursements for those going into the office
  • 73.7% of onsite/hybrid offices have a game room or lounge that allows employees to take fun mental health breaks throughout the workday
  • 40.0% of companies offer at least 7 weeks of paid maternity leave; 15% also offer at least 7 weeks of paid paternity leave for fathers
  • 20.0% of applicants report an average tenure of greater than 10 years
  • 10.0% of Indiana companies have introduced an unlimited paid time off policy to their employees

Apex Benefits Group is a team of benefits strategists committed to aiding individuals in charge of employee benefits in establishing a culture of health and cost-efficiency. Their primary goal is to be pioneers in revolutionizing an industry in need of change, offering support to those advocating for their employees. Apex differentiates itself by being data-centric, with a strong emphasis on top-tier analytics.

Apex has successfully engaged 81% of its team in their wellness program in 2023. Their most recent challenge, centered around "minutes of movement," boasted the highest participation rate to date, with 77% of employees taking part. Since the return to the office “post-Covid,” Apex has made concerted efforts to enhance team cohesion through their wellness program, emphasizing team-building activities.

Apex places a strong focus on mental health support for its employees through a variety of resources. These include an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), educational sessions conducted by the Kinetiq Health Team, which features a licensed clinical social worker, and embedded resources within the medical plan. These resources offer free behavioral health sessions through the employer-paid clinic. In 2023, Apex introduced an innovative initiative called "Me-T-O" (Me Time Off), offering employees two additional paid days off specifically for taking care of their mental health. Their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee has incorporated a mental health education component tailored to the unique challenges faced by their diverse community. In addition to these initiatives, Apex's wellness challenges are designed to provide education about how various activities and practices can impact mental health. For instance, the "Minutes of Movement" challenge educates employees about the link between physical activity and increased happiness. 

2nd Conner Insurance – Indianapolis – 41 Employees

Conner Insurance, established in 1949, has consistently delivered exemplary service to its clients. This comprehensive insurance agency specializes in Employee Benefits, Commercial Property and Casualty, and Personal Insurance.

Conner's wellness program stands out with a variety of unique benefits. In 2022, they organized an impressive 42 onsite activities, a testament to their substantial investment in the program. These activities are coordinated and hosted by the Wellness Committee and include features such as free groceries, daily stretch breaks, onsite Chaplains, cooking demos, monthly game days, and an Annual Wellness Week competition, which allows participants to engage at their preferred level.

Notably, 100% of the Conner team expressed interest in making positive health changes, reflecting a strong culture of well-being within the organization. All team members stated that Conner's culture supports a healthy environment, indicating that the wellness program is highly valued and utilized. Participants also believe that wellness initiatives contribute to increased engagement, satisfaction, and the building of relationships and friendships with teammates. 

In terms of time off and well-being, the organization provides Flex PTO in addition to standard holidays and bereavement leave. They also offer daily stretching breaks led by a personal trainer, which has become a popular activity. Moreover, they hosted a Book Club focused on "The Happiness Equation" this summer, emphasizing mental health. As a further wellness initiative, the company provides Dave Ramsey's SmartDollar financial wellness program to its team at no cost, achieving significant participation with over 75% of employees taking part. The wellness program is undeniably a pivotal component of Conner's organizational culture.

SDI Innovations manages a diverse portfolio of branded products and services designed to address gaps in the education sector and beyond, with a core commitment to providing a hassle-free experience for their customers. The company operates several distinct entities including School Datebooks, STEM Education Works, Eventlink®, Ag Printers, and Datebook Store.

The company’s "Kitchen Table Values" originated in 1985 at an employee’s table and continue to guide the organization. They emphasize doing the right thing in personal and professional interactions, with employees being able to earn "kitchen cards" for their actions. The company places a significant emphasis on mental health, offering remote work options and support in seeking help when needed. Health coaches are available to provide guidance on mental health topics. Work-life balance is highly promoted and practiced within the company. The company has designed a unique benefits strategy to support its associates, focusing on their specific needs. They have a successful partnership with Marathon Health, with strong year-over-year engagement. In 2022, they reached a record number of employees qualifying for the wellness incentive. In 2021, a free mental health benefit was introduced, providing unlimited virtual counseling for associates and their families, resulting in reduced mental health-related claims spend.

To assess work-life balance and overall mental health wellbeing, the company conducts employee surveys. Additionally, they offer half-days during the summer, allowing associates to use this time for self-care and personal needs. This comprehensive benefits approach reflects the organization's commitment to the well-being of its workforce.

AAA Hoosier Motor Club provides Indiana with roadside assistance, insurance, and travel planning. They provide member discounts, service centers, and savings on auto repair and recently launched a new service called “My Pit Crew,” which brings the store to the customer.

The company offers a unique and diverse overall wellness program that generates significant engagement, with on-site health coaches who even ride with fleet drivers to foster personal connections. The program encompasses various wellness aspects, including physical activity and mental health, utilizing data analytics to support consulting programs, challenges, and outreach efforts. Notably, the wellness program is closely integrated with the safety program, resulting in the company being recognized at the National Convention for Innovation wards and winning the Superior Roadside Experience Improvement award.

AAA Hoosier Motor Club prioritizes the management of mental health-related medical claims for its employees. They offer a range of resources through their EAP program, Anthem, and health coaches. Some employees have the option to work from home when needed, and the company continually offers resources and educational support for mental health issues.

They value a culture that encourages diversity, support, celebration, connection, and the recognition of diverse voices through their Business Resource Groups (BRGs). These BRGs are intentionally designed to promote well-being by hosting over 150 events focusing on physical, mental, and financial well-being. The events cover a wide range of topics, including financial literacy, mental health, gender identity, and more.

CNO also launched monthly support groups to facilitate honest conversations around societal issues and unique challenges faced by BRG communities, addressing mental well-being. Their Mental Health Told by the Voices of CNO associates event was a huge success, engaging nearly 700 associates and making a significant impact on addressing mental health stigma. Thanks to this approach, CNO witnessed positive results in their culture and programs, with high percentages of employees feeling safe, finding purpose in their work, and viewing their programs as important.

Their Wellness Center is open seven days a week, offering various group exercise classes and support groups. The high participation rate in their wellness program can be attributed to their consistent recognition as one of the Healthiest Employers in the country. Employees are motivated to engage and contribute to the program's success. Witham fosters a strong sense of community, and their culture, leadership support, and team mentality are unmatched. Witham is described as a family that cares for its members and the community, promoting both wellness and healthcare.

As a hospital system, Witham Health Services recognizes the prevalence of mental health concerns, not just due to COVID-19 but various societal issues. They've partnered with a local mental health provider to provide 24/7 access to both patients and staff. Witham understands the vital connection between physical and mental health and encourages employees to prioritize both aspects. They emphasize a personalized approach to mental health, acknowledging the uniqueness of each individual's needs. Purdue University introduced the Healthy Boiler Program in January 2018, which encompasses five pillars of overall well-being: behavioral health, financial wellness, physical health, social wellness, and work-life integration. This program is actively promoted through various communication channels, including the benefits website, a monthly newsletter, and university-wide communication. The central platform for the program is the Healthy Boiler portal, where employees can access educational resources, workshops, monthly challenges, and incentives.

To qualify for incentives, employees must complete an annual physical, and the introduction of the program has led to an increase in compliance with these physicals. In 2022, physical compliance reached 60%, a notable improvement from the 51.2% compliance rate in 2021. The Healthy Boiler Program has effectively enhanced the well-being of Purdue University's employees by addressing various aspects of their health and incentivizing participation.

2nd U-Haul International – Phoenix, Arizona (Multiple Local Offices) – 17,170 Employees

Since 1945, U-Haul has been the number one choice of do-it-yourself movers, with a network of more than 23,000 locations across all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces. U-Haul is the third largest self-storage operator in North America and offers 876,000 rentable storage units and 75.1 million square feet of self-storage space at owned and managed facilities. U-Haul has been recognized repeatedly as a leading “Best for Vets” employer and was recently named one of the 15 Healthiest Workplaces in America.

In 2022, U-Haul introduced Virta to its benefits package, initially focusing on the Type 2 diabetes program. The outstanding outcomes prompted them to expand offerings to encompass all three Virta programs: Type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, and obesity reversal. Virta's research-based approach effectively and sustainably reverses these conditions without medication or surgery-related risks, costs, or side effects. The program leads to lowered A1c levels, weight loss, and reduced or eliminated insulin use. Since implementing Virta, participants enrolled in the treatment plan have experienced an average reduction in insulin usage by 54% and collectively shed over 3,200 pounds.

To further support mental well-being, U-Haul introduced a Mindset App Reimbursement program in 2022, covering mindfulness, breathwork, and meditation techniques. Executive leadership actively promotes these benefits and encourages team members to utilize them and seek the help they need. The onsite medical clinic integrates mental health benefits into its services, with providers trained to assist team members in accessing the appropriate resources.
