2024 Healthiest Employers of Virginia
October 25, 2024

Healthiest Employers® was started in 2009 as a way to celebrate companies that are putting their people first by investing in the health of their employees. In partnership with Springbuk, we are pleased to announce the 2024 Healthiest Employers of Virginia.

Each company filled out our annual Healthiest Employers application. The responses are scored Rubric style 1-100 scale. The assessment is made up of six categories with yes/no, multiple choice, and short answer questions, with each question totaling .25-3 points. A Healthiest Employers Index (HEI) is assigned to each application to help rank among companies of similar sizes. For information on how the applications are scored, please visit our methodology page here

In the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, a heavily discussed topic has been whether to return to the traditional office or stay on a hybrid/remote work model. Our Virginia applicants reported that:

  • 9.1% work completely in the office or on-site
  • 31.8% report that they are on a hybrid schedule with certain days/times in the office
  • 54.5% only provide specific roles or teams with work-from-home opportunities
  • 4.5% are considered a fully remote workforce with no required days in the office

Congratulations to all of our winners this year! Please note that employee counts are based on their national full-time employee count and company headquarters. Write-ups were only completed on the top winner in each category.

1st City of Alexandria

Alexandria
2,500 Employees

The City of Alexandria is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia located on the Potomac River within sight of Washington, D.C. It is nationally recognized for its rich history and beautifully preserved 18th—and 19th-century architecture. With more than 2,500 employees, the City is largely populated by civil service professionals.

The City of Alexandria's unique benefit is its mental health program, developed in partnership with Spring Health. Through this program, employees, their spouses/partners, and dependents receive six free therapy sessions annually, which can be conducted in person or virtually. The program is available for children aged six and older. It allows participants to select their therapists based on race, gender, trauma topics, and location, ensuring a tailored fit for their needs. Sessions can include individual, couple, family, or relationship counseling. The program has seen significant success, with a tenfold increase in engagement compared to the previous EAP provider, reaching a 21% enrollment rate, and growing by about 1% each month. Employee testimonials highlight the program's positive impact, from saving marriages to supporting children's mental health. The program extends beyond employees to benefit their families as well.

For environmental well-being, the City of Alexandria has partnered with the Transportation and Environmental Sanitation Department to provide eco-friendly initiatives for employees. One notable offering is a transportation benefits program, which gives employees $270 per month to use for public transportation to work.

“I am proud of our wellness program because I have personally watched this program grow from one that simply focuses on physical well-being to one that encompasses all of the dimensions of well-being. During that time, the adoption of the different initiatives from our employees has been astounding. It has always been challenging to get our various workforces to participate, stay engaged, and pay attention to their health. We have grown to the point that our employees cannot wait for what the program offers next and the various challenges the program offers to earn points and money off their health insurance.” –Jina Edwards, Benefits Manager
