2024 Healthiest Employers of Washington
November 26, 2024

Healthiest Employers® was started in 2009 to celebrate companies that prioritize their people by investing in their employees' health. In partnership with Springbuk, we are pleased to announce the 2024 Healthiest Employers Washington.

Each company filled out our annual Healthiest Employers application. The responses are scored using a rubric-style 1-100 scale. The assessment consists of six categories, with yes/no, multiple-choice, and short-answer questions, each totaling .25-3 points. A Healthiest Employers Index (HEI) is assigned to each application to help rank among companies of similar sizes. Please visit our methodology page here for information on how the applications are scored

Congratulations to all of our winners this year! Please note that write-ups were only conducted on the 1st place winner in each category.

1st Permanente Dental Associates, P.C.

Portland, Oregon (Local Office: Vancouver)
112 Employees

Permanente Dental Associates, P.C., is a dentist-owned group practice in the Northwest that collaborates with Kaiser Permanente Health Plan to deliver integrated oral health care to over 290,000 members, most of whom also receive medical care through Kaiser. Using shared electronic medical records, the practice enhances coordination between dental and primary care.

The PDA Wellness Program has long prioritized employee engagement but experienced a decline in participation since the pandemic, despite remaining above industry standards. A committee identified that the program’s intensity overwhelmed providers adjusting to post-pandemic demands, leading to reduced involvement despite the program's meaningfulness.

To address this, the committee implemented four strategies: reducing program intensity by offering fewer activities worth more points, rewarding existing healthy habits, increasing incentives, and engaging new hires through a Welcome Challenge and tailored incentives.

These changes, introduced nine months ago, have led to a measurable increase in participation, highlighting the program’s effectiveness. The Wellness Committee remains dedicated to addressing challenges, fostering opportunities, and delivering meaningful experiences for employees.

"I am continually inspired by the transformative impact of the PDA Wellness Program. Each year, our PDA Wellness Committee demonstrates an unwavering commitment to translating our core values into impactful initiatives for our dentists and professional staff. The program epitomizes inclusivity, diversity, belonging, equity, health, and wellness. This steadfast dedication consistently yields tangible and intangible benefits for our group. As we strive for excellence, the PDA Wellness Program stands as a beacon of our commitment to the well-being and success of our team." –Cyrus Lee, DMD, Chief Executive Officer and Dental Director

I am proud of the workplace this creates for everyone and how that drives the way we then care for our customers and the community. 1st PeaceHealth

Vancouver
12,884 Employees

PeaceHealth, a 130-year-old Catholic healthcare ministry, is among the largest healthcare systems in the Northwest. With over 16,000 caregivers, a multi-specialty medical group of more than 1,200 clinicians, and 10 medical centers, it serves communities across Washington, Oregon, and Alaska. Guided by its enduring mission, PeaceHealth is dedicated to improving the health and wellness of the communities it serves.

In late 2021, PeaceHealth partnered with Spring Health to enhance its Employee Assistance Program (EAP), supplementing existing internal emotional support initiatives like therapy groups, mindfulness meditations, and wellness workshops. The partnership provides a wide range of culturally responsive, evidence-based mental health services, including therapy, coaching, and on-demand self-help tools across areas such as career growth, LGBTQ+ wellness, parenting, and recovery support. Specific resources for managers include coaching on crisis management, fitness for duty evaluations, and leadership webinars.

In 2023, nearly 37% of PeaceHealth caregivers utilized the EAP, significantly exceeding industry averages. Over 28,000 appointments were booked by caregivers and dependents, with enrollment growing by 53%, including a doubling of dependent participation. Despite high usage, the average wait time for appointments remained just 1.1 days, compared to the national average of 25 days. Among caregivers with depressive symptoms, 87% experienced measurable clinical improvement. The program’s success is attributed to its broad accessibility and effective communication about its benefits.

“During the pandemic and coming out of it, we knew that our caregivers — like many others — were struggling. We have curated our health and wellness program to provide caregivers with the resources they want and need, and strive to make them available where, when, and how caregivers prefer to access help. From the stats provided by Spring Health, caregiver feedback, and our internal reviews, we know we’re succeeding and still want to continue to improve where possible and reach even more caregivers.” –Eve Logsdon, Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer
